Brrr, it's Cold Outside - The Lady in the Soccer Suit

It's not that Maryland or the Mid-Atlantic is struggling with crazy and frigid weather, but we've gotten rain and wind! Frankly, it's not pleasant, but I like to get outdoors whenever I can, especially when refereeing soccer! Now, in mid-January, anything is possible with wind, rain, snow, sleet and ice.

Strong winds have been our biggest nemesis. All three games I refereed this weekend were met with something - rain, wind, or both. Yikes! I'll take it, though. It's better than being indoors (Futsol) with multiple whistles screeching into my sensitive ears. To be comfortable and not constantly think about a HOT shower or HOT tea/chocolate, it's all in the layers of dressing for the day. Thankfully, in the 14 years I have been on the pitch, I've learned how to capitulate to every type of weather.

Right now, it's full-on wool sweaters, down coats, and good hats and gloves that keep out the cold winds. These are good clothing choices for the AR (Assistant Referee) position. As a Center Referee, there is a lot more running involved (at least for me), so warming up is not a problem. Lesser layers work well. My down jacket under my jersey kept out the chill of the 30-40 MPH gusting winds. I also wore black leggings and topped those with a pair of black sweatpants. I was cozy and never that cold.

It's taken me a few years to create the outdoor wardrobe to battle anything that comes my way on the pitch. Wool and Down are my go-to's for the winter months.

bSoleille!

Hello from the pitch! Such blue skies, but oh, that wind (can't see!)
