It's that time of year (yes, the song), but I'm talking about a Christmas cactus that is almost in full bloom. The Best Daughter's M-I-L, Ann, gave it as a gift to us last year. I love it - all the pretty blooms were outstanding. The colorful dark pink flowers lasted quite a while, then died and dropped all over the floor in late January. I wasn't sure what would happen to it in the last year, but in late November, there was a movement with the stems or petals budding out a bit.
The flowers were slow to bloom, but when they did, it's absolutely beautiful. I did nothing special with it and even moved all my plants to another part of the living room/dining room combo (perhaps with a little more light) because I had the rooms painted in late October by making way for changing some furniture around. That's it. No extra water or food or removing its red foil jacket. Ha!
I hope it will bloom fully like last year and then go into "hiding." Heck, it will have to hide in plain sight until it blooms again if it will.
If you have Christmas cacti, you know what I mean. I love the color and energy it brings to my non-bloomin' orchids! Now, those guys are a piece of work, amiright? And this cactus is fabulous at Manufacturing Sunshine during these dark days of late fall.
bSoleille!
