It’s interesting that I’m receiving photos and other images from various sources not 10 years ago, but nine years ago.
Take for instance today when I received several photos from Shutterfly from that same Botswana 🇧🇼 trip I posted about a day or two ago. Those pics came up in my camera roll. It certainly jogs the memories and those blissful moments I had traveling over the expansive desert landscape that took hours (not many tar roads there). All vehicles need to be substantial with amazing off the road springs and shocks. We got stuck a few times, but were never in danger, at least with animals.
You know, I loved every minute out on that stretch of Earth where few people live. If that movie Out of Africa comes to mind, it was a lot like that.
I am fortunate and forever grateful for that trip, and my trip to South Africa, too. I can’t get enough of the wildlife and the friendly people who manage the most extraordinary place on the planet. Now, I’ve been told by the natives that it’s not all that glamorous when elephants trample their farms no matter how they try to keep them out. We may fight mice in our house on occasion, but many people in Botswana and other sub Saharan countries fight off the big five (elephants destroying the most).
I try not to think elephants 🐘 have those capabilities because I love them for their unique abilities and smarts.
Onto the mighty lions, and the fact it’s the females who make the kills to eat. They are pure hunters and learn from their mothers. The first photo is a young female learning to hunt by finding branches to take back to their mother. We saw the whole thing play out. That’s what is fascinating about a safari.
The males, well, they have their own ways to stay in the pride. Lion kings! They not only look good with thick handsome manes, but patrol, mark and guard. They all work together and have terrific hiding places in plain sight (heaps of brush).
